SPARK KNOCK - 1.6L - DISTRIBUTOR DRIVE COUPLING
FORD 1983-84 ESCORT, EXP
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-84 LYNX, LN7
CALIBRATIONS: All with E.F.I.
Article 84-20-10 has been revised to include 1983 vehicles.
The subject vehicles may have a customer concern of spark knock, erratic spark advance (+/- 7~ possible) or changes of initial timing, as observed by a timing light. These may be caused by excessive distributor drive coupling wear.
Figure 10:
If the above symptoms are experienced, remove the
distributor and inspect the distributor drive coupling
for indication of severe wear or "pound in" (Figure
10). If severe wear is observed, a new drive coupling
(Part No. E4FZ-12091-B) must be installed using the
following procedures.
Removal
1. Remove rotor.
2. Remove drive coupling spring with small screwdriver or ice pick. Take care not to change drive coupling or spring.
3. a. Using an air hose, blow dirt and oil from the drive end of the distributor.
b. Put a small paint dot on the drive coupling and the shaft to note orientation for re-assembly.
Figure 11:
c. Place the distributor support tool (Figure 11) in a vise and tighten or open vise jaws enough to support drive coupling, yet let pin drop out of the coupling.
d. Line-up the drive pin with the slot on the base.
4. With someone holding the distributor steady on the support tool or vise, use a 5/32" diameter drift and hammer to drive the point out of the shaft.
5. Remove the distributor from the fixture. Remove the drive coupling from the fixture and place aside for re-assembly.
6. Check for burrs on the end of the shaft and especially around the drive pin hole. If burrs are present, polish shaft with emery paper and wipe clean.
Installation
1. Place drive coupling over the shaft and line up paint dots that were made during disassembly. Start pin into drive coupling and shaft.
2. With someone holding the distributor steady on the support tool or vise, drive the pin into the shaft until the end of the pin is flush with the stop in the drive coupling.
3. Check for free movement of the drive coupling on the pin and that the pin does not extend beyond the step in the coupling in either direction.
4. Remove the distributor from the fixture and check for free rotation.
5. Install the drive coupling spring in the groove on the drive coupling.
