Engines assembled after July 27, 1983 use new design cylinder head bolts that do not require separate torque washers under the head of the bolts (Figure 26). The torque surface is provided with a flat surface integrated at the head of the bolt.
For service, discard original torque washers when using the new design bolts on engines built prior to July 27, 1983. This will prevent potential thread stripping at the engine block assembly when the bolts are torqued.

The washers are still required when using old design bolts.
