83ford21 Article No. 83-4-10

STALLS/STUMBLE - 1.6L EFI - ELECTRIC SHORT IN WIRE HARNESS (ALL CALIBRATIONS)

FORD 1983 ESCORT, EXP

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 LYNX, LN7

CALIBRATIONS: All with E.F.I.

Stall/Stumble concerns on vehicles assembled between November 1 and November 4, 1982, may be attributable to the engine compartment EEC IV Wiring Harness (12A581). The service procedure is installation of a new harness.

1. Inspect the engine harness to determine if the part number is E3EB-12A581-AP.
2. Disconnect the harness ground at the EEC IV mounting bracket.
3. Road test the vehicle with the harness ground disconnected to determine if the concern has been eliminated. If concern is eliminated, install new 12A581 harness assembly following steps 4 through 9.
4. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
5. Remove the console to gain access to the wiring connections at the EEC IV module. (Refer to the 1983 Escort/Lynx Shop Manual, Section 45-31 for removal.)
6. Working inside the car, disconnect the 12A581 harness from the module, two relays and two oneway connectors and push the in-car wiring through the grommet hole into the engine compartment.
7. The 12A581 harness routes across the dash panel extension and forward along the left hand apron. Working along the routing, disconnect all connectors and retainers in the engine compartment and remove/discard the suspect harness.
8. Install the new harness, Part Number E3EB- 12A581-AS (E3FZ-12A581-B) reversing the removal sequence.
9. Connect the battery. Check circuit operation. Reinstall console.
