Ignition Timing - Self Test Indication

83ford20 Article No. 83-6-17

IGNITION SYSTEM TIMING INDICATION - SELF TEST 1.6L ENGINES WITH EEC-IV - EFI

FORD 1983 ESCORT, EXP

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 LYNX, LN7

CALIBRATIONS: 3-03A-R12 and 3-03A-R13

Changes to ignition base timing require different BTDC increments be used during "self test" on the above calibrations.

FIGURE 19:

"Self-Test" timing was previously considered in specification if during "Self-Test" the TDC indicator fell within the "dealership service diagnostic usage only" notch located on the front engine damper (Figure 19).

Due to increases in BTDC base timing, shown below, "Self-Test" timing must now be read by aligning the appropriate BTDC increment on the timing belt cover with the "dealership service diagnostic usage only" notch (Figure 19).
"Self-Test" timing for calibration 3-03A-R01, R05 remains as stated in the 1983 "Emission Diagnosis -Engine/Electronics" Manual.

Affected Production Timing BTDC
Calibration From - To Increase Old New
3-03A-R12 Job 1 to 2/1/83 3~ BTDC 10~ 13~
3-03A-R13 1/10/83 to End of 5~ BTDC 10~ 15~
Model Year

NOTE: The "Emission Diagnosis Engine/Electronics", Volume G, Section 20 of the 1983 Car/Truck Shop Manuals shows timing references for 1.6L EFI units to be 10~ BTDC (27~-33~). The above changes will modify the Shop Manual as follows.
Quick Test Pinpoint
Tolerance (BTDC) Test Timing (BTDC)
(Step 4.0, (Stop Q1, Q2,
Calibration Page 20-13) Page 20-60)
3-03A-R01, R05 27 - 33~ 10~ (No Change)
3-03A-R12 30 - 36~ 13~ (+3~ Change)
3-03A-R13 32 - 38~ 15~ (+5~ Change)

When running Quick Test or Pinpoint Tests where verification of timing is required, the above chart should be used to determine correct values.
