Muffler - Lack of Power/Stalls/No Start

83ford17 Article No. 83-10-16

NO START/STALLS/LACK OF POWER - COLD - MUFFLER CONDENSATION

FORD 1981-83 ESCORT, 1982-83 EXP

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1981-83 LYNX, 1982-83 LN7

When Escort/Lynx, EXP/LN7 vehicles are driven mostly on short trips during cold weather, water may condense in the muffler, restricting exhaust flow. This condition may result in engine lack of power, stalls, or crank but no start.

To service this condition, use the following procedure:

1. Raise the vehicle on hoist.

Figure 12:

2. Drill a 1/8" (.125"/3.2 mm) hole through the lower part of the front muffler head. The hole location should be 3/8" from bottom edge of muffler (Figure 12).
CAUTION:
The following precautions should be taken when performing the above procedure:

1. Do not use an electric drill (use air-type drill only).
2. Be sure the exhaust system is cool and stand away from the underside of the muffler because water may drain after hole has been drilled.
3. Recommend safety glasses be worn.
