This article cancels and supersedes Article 83-8-4, published in TSB No. 83-8, dated April 19, 1983, and is adding 1982 vehicles equipped with an H.O. engine to the list of affected vehicles. An exhaust leak or NVH condition on 1982 vehicles equipped with an H.O. engine and 1983 EFI vehicles built prior to January 19, 1983, may be caused by a weld being broken or torn at the manifold pipe retaining stud located at the steady rest bracket (Figure 1).
1. Position a large "C" clamp at the exhaust manifold pipe and steady rest bracket then turn the clamp adjustment screw to draw the retaining stud to its original position on the pipe.
2. Tack weld the retaining stud head to the manifold pipe using stainless steel welding rod SAE 51409, SAE 30308, or A.M. 363.
3. Remove the steady rest bracket from the retaining stud and transaxle.
4. Weld the stud 360~ around the periphery of the stud head. Take care not to allow the weld to extend or burn the steady rest bracket bearing area, as this could cause a misalignment condition for attachment.
5. Inspect for any weld porosity pin holes.
6. Re-assemble the steady rest bracket to the retaining bolt and transaxle housing.
