This article supersedes TSB articles 82-8-2 and 83-17-1. Relocation of driver's split bench seat rearward. 1982 Ford LTD/Mercury Marquis built after 5-3-82, 1983-84 Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis except station wagon units without a R.P.O. right hand remote controlled outside rear view mirror having a flat lense-1982.
NOTE: Due to the lack of floor pan provisions, the following procedure applies only to vehicles built after May 3, 1982.

WARNING: TO ENSURE STATION WAGON MODELS MEET ALL APPLICABLE VISIBILITY SAFETY STANDARDS, DO NOT RELOCATE THE DRIVER'S SEAT UNLESS THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A R.P.O. RIGHT HAND REMOTE CONTROLLED OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR.

1. Remove the driver's seat and track assembly from the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate removal procedure of the 1982 Car Shop Manual as indicated below:

^ Seats with Power Tracks - Part 41-08

NOTE: Temporarily remove the inboard seat belt attachment.

2. Retain the two front seat track attaching bolts. Discard the rear seat track attaching studs and washers, 3. Remove the carpeting as required to gain access to the floor pan. Refer to the appropriate removal procedure of the 1982 Car Shop Manual, Part 45-26.

4. Using a 11 mm (7/16 inch) drill bit, drill out the two

5 mm (3/16 inch) diameter pilot holes located in the No. 1 crossmember, as shown in Figure 2.
5. Locate the drill dimple on the inboard side of the No. 1 crossmember, then using a hole saw provide a 31.75 mm (1-1/4 inch) diameter clearance hole as shown in Figure 2.

WARNING: TO PRECLUDE THE ENTRY OF EXHAUST FUMES, WATER OR OTHER CONTAMINATES INTO THE VEHICLE, BE CAREFUL NOT TO PENETRATE THE FLOOR PAN WHEN DRILLING THE TWO 11 mm (7/16 inch) DIAMETER HOLES AND THE 31.75 mm (1-1/4 inch) DIAMETER HOLE IN THE NO. 1 CROSSMEMBER.
6. Raise the vehicle to facilitate the locating and drilling of the front seat track attaching holes from the underside of the vehicle.

7. Using a 11 mm (7/16 inch) drill bit, drill out the rear

5 mm (3/16 inch) diameter pilot holes located in the front seat track reinforcements, as shown in Figure 4.
8. Lower the vehicle.

9. Install the two specified "U" nuts in the No. 1 crossmember as shown in Figure 3.
10. Install the rubber plugs in the original front seat track attaching weld nuts, as shown in Figure 3.
11. Cut a 19 mm (3/4 inch) diameter hole in the carpet at the two new outboard seat track attaching locations and retain the plugs for patching as described in Step 14.
12. Cut a 25 mm (1 inch) cross slit at the new inboard seat track attaching locations.
13. From three inch wide tape (D6AZ-19627-A) cut four pieces three inches long and apply to the back side of the carpet, covering the original front seat track attaching locations.
14. From the front side of the carpet insert the 19 mm (3/4 inch) diameter plugs in the original front and rear outboard clearance holes and press firmly to the tape. Though the front and rear inboard attachments do not require plugging, press the slit carpet firmly to the tape.
15. Install the carpet.
16. Place the seat in the vehicle slightly forward of the seat to floor pan attaching holes to facilitate the installation of the inboard seat belt.
17. Install the inboard seat belt and torque the attaching bolt to 30-43 N-m (22-32 ft.lbs.).
18. Position the seat and track assembly over the new attaching holes.
19. Install one flat washer under each seat track rear floor. Then install the bolts and torque to 25-44 N-m (18-32 ft.lbs.).
20. Apply caulking cord (D6AZ-19560-A) to the threads of the previously removed front attaching bolts and the washers of the now specified nut and washer assemblies.
21. Install the front seat track attaching bolts from inside the vehicle.
22. Raise the vehicle.
23. With the aid of another Technician, install the nut and washer assemblies to the seat attaching bolts and torque to 25-44 N-m (18-32 ft.lbs.).
24. Lower the vehicle.
25. Check the seat tracks for proper operation.
