SQUEAKS - INSTRUMENT PANEL

FORD 1983 LTD

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 MARQUIS

This article is being reprinted to clarify that the instrument cluster squeak elimination procedure does not require the removal of the instrument cluster, only the applique, and to correct the basic part number of the instrument panel applique as the causal part.

Figure 24:

Vehicles built before 11-8-82 may emit a squeak at the "A" Pillar garnish moulding or at the instrument cluster lens. An anti-squeak tape on the "A" Pillar moulding may have been mislocated during assembly and may require relocating the tape to the proper location. To service an instrument cluster lens squeak, install an antisqueak tape.

For the "A" Pillar moulding removal, refer to Section 45-16-1, Volume B, 1983 Car Shop Manual. Reposition anti-squeak tape on "A" Pillar as illustrated in Figure 24. Instrument panel cluster applique assembly removal can be accomplished using Car Shop Manual procedure in Section 33-50-1.

Install a piece of clear mylar tape 1/4 x 13 inches to the top shelf of the cluster lens to prevent squeak. Tape must not appear on vertical face of lens.
