A new 3-4 shift valve configuration and spring was incorporated in production mid-March, 1983 which moves the 3-4 shift to a higher vehicle speed and provides for 4-3 downshifts with less throttle and at higher speeds.
Figure 14:
The new shift valve is comprised of two parts and the bore plug has been replaced by a sleeve (Figure 14).
The new shift valve configuration will change the 3-4/4-3 shift pattern. The new 3-4 shift will feel delayed if compared directly with the old design. This condition may be more evident prior to engine break-in. The old design would upshift to fourth gear even during fairly heavy throttle acceleration. The new design will not upshift to fourth gear until the vehicle approaches the desired speed and the driver eases up on the accelerator pedal.
The new 4-3 downshift pattern feels more responsive than the old design. At moderate to heavy throttle, the transmission will downshift to third gear easier and at higher speeds.
Easier downshifts or delayed 3-4 shifts is the intent of the new shift pattern and it should not be interpreted as a transmission concern. Proper explanation to the customer of this as normal vehicle operation is required.
