83ford7 Article No. 83-21-4

COLD START WITH PROLONGED ENGINE WARMUPS AND HIGH CAM SPEEDS - 10~ F AMBIENTS OR BELOW - ALL ENGINES WITH CARBURETORS (NON CFI, EFI)

FORD ALL CAR LINES - ALL MODEL YEARS

LINCOLN-MERCURY ALL CAR LINES - ALL MODEL YEARS

Driveability concerns in extremely cold ambients (-10~ F or less) may be caused by insufficient heat to the induced air system. Check the integrity of the air intake system to minimize cold air leakage at all joints using the following procedure.

1. The carburetor to air cleaner gasket must be intact and properly seated on the carburetor.
2. The air cleaner tray must be properly seated on the carburetor.
3. The cover wing nut must be tightened to specification to seal the air cleaner cover.
4. The hot air tube must be secure and intact at both the intake duct and the heat shroud.

NOTE: Replace any damaged air cleaner components.

To insure proper component function, check the following:

1. All vacuum hose connections to the air intake components.
2. The operation of the intake duct door by applying and removing 16" Hg. vacuum with a hand pump to the vacuum motor and observing door movement.

For component function, see the appropriate Car/Truck Shop Manual.
