Odometer - Trip Reset Malfunction
83ford16 Article No. 83-9-1ODOMETER - TRIP RESET MALFUNCTION
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 MARQUIS
If difficulty in properly resetting the trip odometer is encountered it may be caused by a misalignment of the odometer reset shaft with the cluster inner lens opening, causing a binding condition. The bind prevents the shaft from fully returning after being pushed to reset and preventing the odometer pinion gear from engaging. Without proper pinion gear engagement, all of the numerals roll simultaneously.
If trip odometer complaint vehicles are encountered, verify if the reset shaft is rubbing against the inner lens and, if so, the following procedure should be followed.
1. Remove appropriate appliques for access to instrument cluster.
2. Remove instrument cluster lens and mask assembly.
Figure 1:
3. By hand, gently bend the trip reset shaft away from the edge of the inner lens, approximately 1/16 inch or as required to remove binding condition (Figure 1).
NOTE: Before reassembling lens and mask assembly, remove any fingerprints or dirt from the inner lens surfaces.
4. Reposition lens and mask assembly to the cluster and check for adequate clearance of reset shaft to inner lens opening. Verify proper trip odometer operation.
