Rear Engine Cover Plate - Knocking Noise

83ford7 Article No. 83-21-3

NOISE - ENGINE KNOCK (3.3L C5 TRANSMISSION) - REAR ENGINE COVER PLATE CONTACTS CONVERTER STUDS

FORD 1983 LTD EQUIPPED WITH 3.3L AND C5 TRANSMISSION

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 MARQUIS EQUIPPED WITH 3.3L AND C5 TRANSMISSION

Some 3.3L engines built prior to May 23, 1983, may have been assembled with the rear engine cover plate bowed towards the transmission. This will cause the converter studs to contact the cover plate and result in an engine knock.

This condition can be serviced by removing the inspection cover plate, located at the lower end of the transmission housing, and pry the engine cover plate away from the converter studs using a long screwdriver. Separation of the transmission from the engine is not necessary.
