Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair


Tighten cylinder head bolts a little at a time in steps in the sequence shown in the illustrations. Final tightening should be to the torque specifications listed in the Engine Tightening table. After tightening the bolts to specifications, they should not be disturbed.

1. Drain cooling system and remove air cleaner.
2. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold and pull it down.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable and transmission downshift rod from carburetor.
4. Disconnect fuel inlet line at fuel filter hose, and distributor vacuum line at carburetor.
5. Disconnect coolant lines at carburetor spacer, if equipped. Remove radiator upper hose at outlet housing.
6. Disconnect distributor vacuum line at distributor. Disconnect carburetor fuel inlet line at fuel pump. Remove lines as an assembly.
7. Disconnect spark plug wires at plugs and temperature sending unit wire at sending unit.
8. Remove crankcase ventilation system. Remove hoses from Thermactor system as necessary for accessibility.
9. Remove valve rocker arm cover.
10. Remove rocker arm shaft assembly.
11. Remove valve pushrods.
12. Remove remaining cylinder head bolts and lift off head.
13. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head according to sequence shown in Fig. 12 in three steps: step 1, 50-55 ft. lbs.; step 2, 60-65 ft. lbs.; step 3, 70-75 ft. lbs.
