BRAKE - PEDAL TRAVEL LONGER THAN NORMAL AND/OR SPONGY PEDAL FEEL
FORD 1983 MUSTANG, FAIRMONT, LTD, T-BIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 CAPRI, ZEPHYR, MARQUIS, COUGAR
The above vehicles built after November 1, 1982, and equipped with revised 1983 brake caliper (see 1983 Shop Manual Section 12-20) could experience long pedal travel and/or "spongy" pedal feel. For owners unaccustomed to this condition who prefer a "firmer" pedal feel, the following service should be performed in the order indicated.
Check the vehicle after each step for acceptability of travel or feel.
1. Bleed the complete brake system.
2. Gauge the rear brake drum to shoe and lining clearance on both rear wheels and set to specification, if necessary.
3. Check front wheel bearing end play and adjust, if necessary.
If the above steps do not resolve the concern, both front brake caliper assemblies and shoe and linings should be replaced with the following parts:
R.H. Caliper Service Part Number E3SZ-2B120-B L.H. Caliper Service Part Number E3SZ-2B121-B
NOTE: These calipers include shoe and lining. They are color-coded pink and white for positive identification.
The service procedures required above should be performed as described in Section 12-01 or 12-20 of the appropriate 1983 Shop Manual.
