- DESCRIPTION OF CHANGES AND INTERCHANGEABILITY FOR 1984


FORD 1983-1/2,84 MUSTANG, T-BIRD, LTD, CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-1/2,84 CAPRI, COUGAR, MARQUIS, GRAND MARQUIS, MARK VII, LINCOLN, CONTINENTAL

LIGHT TRUCKS 1983-1/2,84 F-SERIES, E-SERIES

AOD transmissions will have the following changes incorporated for 1983-1/2 and 1984 model vehicles.

Twenty (20) models are currently released for the 1984 Automatic Overdrive Transmission (AOD) Program: Sixteen (16) passenger car models and four (4) F-Series/ESeries models. This is an increase of three (3) transmission models from the 17 models in 1983.

New to AOD for 1984 is the Mustang/Capri vehicle line equipped with either the 3.8L or the 5.0L H.O. engine both scheduled as a running change after Job #1. The 5.0L H.O. engine is a new power plant application with the AOD transmission. The Mark VII for 1984 will have the console floor shift (cable type) transmission shift controls. The F-100 truck has been replaced by the Ranger application.

Major design changes for incorporation of the 3.8L and 5.0L H.O. Mustang/Capri application:

^ Two (2) new transmission models.
^ One (1) new main control valve body calibration.
^ New manual lever (oriented down).
^ Both 3.8L and 5.0L H.O. packages will have the cable type floor shift with the shift brackets installed on the rear of the transmission on two extension housing stud bolts.
^ 13 mm hex head extension housing bolts will be used in holes #1 and #6 (maybe #2 also) to provide bearing surface for the floor shift bracket. 10 mm hex head bolts will be used in the remainder of the extension housing holes.
^ TV levers will be curved similar to truck lever.
^ Converter has a higher stall ratio (165K) for improved performance.
Mark VII applications:

^ 13 mm hex head extension housing bolts will be used in holes #1 and #6 (maybe #2 also) to provide bearing surface for the floor shift bracket. 10 mm hex head bolts will be used in the remainder of the extension housing holes.

AOD design changes affecting all passenger car and truck applications:

^ The dipstick full mark for operating temperature (hot) fluid fill has been changed to a cross-hatched area instead of arrows. Do not add fluid if level is in the cross-hatched area.
^ The following AOD hardware changes were incorporated on all model AOD transmissions with build dates of July 19, 1983, and later. These hardware changes will affect past model serviceability.

1. Common forward and reverse clutch friction plates and pressure plates which result in new internal snap ring locations for both the reverse clutch drum and the forward clutch cylinder. (The forward clutch cylinder friction plate usage will be expanded to the reverse clutch drum and the reverse clutch pressure plate usage will be expanded to the forward clutch cylinder.)
2. A new external retaining ring for the intermediate one-way clutch which results in a deeper snap ring groove on the reverse clutch drum.

Serviceability Revisions:

The new reverse clutch drums (no change to number of plates; passenger car - 3 plate drum, 4 plate drum and truck drum; and no change to clutch pack clearance specification) will have an internal identification groove adjacent to the clutch pack snap ring groove. This internal identification groove indicates that the 7E311 friction plates and the new intermediate one-way clutch snap ring must be used with this drum (Figure 19).
When service stock is exhausted on the original reverse clutch drum, the new reverse clutch drum will be the replacement drum for all past model service.

The new intermediate one-way clutch retaining ring will replace all stock in the depot and will be used on all past model service, but must be used with the new level reverse clutch drum. Therefore, whenever the original design level drum is replaced on past model applications, the intermediate one-way clutch retaining ring must be replaced with the new level retaining ring.

The new forward clutch cylinder (same number of plates as before - 4 plate cylinder and 5 plate cylinder; and no change to clutch pack clearance specification) will be identified by a reduced chamfer (1/32" x 45~ O.D.) vs. the previous forward clutch cylinder (1/8" x 45~ O.D.). The reduced chamfer identification indicates that 7F278 pressure plate must be used (Figure 20).
^ All converters will have an orange special balance mark on a converter stud. If a flywheel bolt hole has a special balance mark, align the marks to avoid powertrain imbalance.
^ Passenger cars with auxiliary oil coolers will have an "H" fitting that bypasses some of the auxiliary cooler flow, especially during cold weather operation to ensure lubrication flow to the transmission.

Carburetor Design Changes Affecting TV Linkage Adjustment Procedure:

Passenger Cars with 3.8L CFI

^ A new idle speed control motor (ISC) will be incorporated on the carburetor replacing other conventional throttle positioners. The ISC will have the capability of varying the throttle plate opening via signals from the EEC IV system. Before TV linkage is checked and adjusted, the ISC motor plunger must be retracted. Refer to the Shop Manual for the revised procedure.
E and F-Series 4.9L YFA-FBC

^ A new idle speed control motor (ISC) (same as 3.8L CFI passenger car) will be incorporated on the carburetor replacing other throttle positioners. The ISC motor plunger must be retracted before checking and adjusting the TV linkage. But, in addition, there is a fast idle cam lever and that must be de-cammed before the TV linkage is adjusted. Refer to the Shop Manual for the revised procedure.
