Aluminum road wheels with clear protective coating over bright machined aluminum may become damaged due to corrosion and service wear. This clear coating cannot be serviced as a local repair because of the transparent nature of the coating material and the desired uniform appearance of the base metal. If the base metal is damaged from corrosion or impression, the whole wheel surface must be repaired.
There is no proven satisfactory field service system developed to restore aluminum wheel appearance quality. The best service for aluminum wheels is regular washing with Ford Wash and Wax (or equivalent). Automatic car wash tire brushes may damage aluminum wheel clearcoat. Before using such a service be sure abrasive type brushes are not being used. DO NOT use steel wool, abrasive cleaners, strong detergents, alkaline or acidic products.
