STALL COLD - 3.8L C.F.I. - AFTER TRANSMISSION ENGAGEMENT
FORD 1984 MUSTANG, T-BIRD, LTD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 CAPRI, COUGAR, MARQUIS
CALIBRATIONS: All with 3.8L C.F.I.
Some of the above vehicles may be subject to engine stalls if drive engagement occurs more than 30 seconds after cold start before the engine temperature is normalized.
The calibration adds fuel for the first 30 seconds after cold start-up to improve the initial running characteristics. After 30 seconds, the fuel strategy begins to lean out and at the same time the idle speed control begins decreasing the engine idle speed producing conditions where an engagement stall may occur.
This condition is inherent to the calibration and no service fix is possible. Concerned drivers should be told that the recommended start up procedure is to engage the transmission within 30 seconds after cold start.
