LIGHTS - FOG LAMP - WIRING REVISED FOR STATES OF NEW JERSEY, VIRGINIA, AND PENNSYLVANIA

FORD 1984 MUSTANG GT

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 CAPRI RS

The 1984 Mustang GT and the Capri RS vehicles equipped with fog lamps must be modified to comply with current New Jersey, Virginia, and Pennsylvania requirements that fog lamps operate only when the low beam headlights are on.

The subject vehicles have been built with fog lamps that will operate anytime the parking lights, low beam, or high beam headlights are on.

Procedure:

Procedure for connecting existing fog lamp circuits to operate (only) with the headlamps in low beam mode. Procedure is necessary for compliance with Virginia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania requirements, and also without interferring with the optional lamp outage feature if the car is so equipped.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
2. Remove the lower trim panel from the instrument panel below steering column.
3. Remove the two halves of the trim covers from around the steering column.

4. Disconnect the turn signal switch connector part of 14401 wiring assembly. Item #4 on the steering column illustration (Figure 2).
5. Remove Circuit #13A Red-Black stripe wire from the connector, Item #4.
6. Remove part of the tape tie and fold circuit #13A back on harness and secure with tape as shown on steering column illustration (Figure 2).
7. Install Circuit #13A removed from the turn signal connector (item #4) into the blank, single terminal included in the E4ZZ-15A211-A Wiring Assembly (item #3) as shown on the steering column illustration (Figure 2).
8. Install the short wire #13A of the E4ZZ-15A211-A jumper wire assembly into the cavity previously vacated of the turn signal wiring connector Item #4 of steering column illustration (Figure 2).
9. Route the long wire #13 of the E4ZZ-15A211-A jumper wire assembly inside the instrument panel (over the fuse panel wiring to the fog lamp switch connector).

10. Disconnect the connector from the fog lamp switch and remove Circuit #14 Brown wire from the connector. Cut off the terminal, insulate the cut end with tape and secure to the harness. Refer to Figure 1 showing the wire routing and fog lamp switch.
11. Install the long wire of the jumper wire assembly into the same terminal cavity the #14 Circuit Brown wire was removed from.
12. Secure the long wire to the fog lamp switch wiring with a strap. Reconnect the connector and wiring to the fog lamp switch. Refer to Figure 1 showing the wire routing and fog lamp switch.

13. Reconnect the turn signal switch connector to the turn signal switch on the steering column. See steering column illustration (Figure 2).

FIGURE 3:

14. Pull the two single mated connectors down the steering column as far forward as possible, and secure to the turn signal wiring assembly with a strap as shown on the steering column wiring illustration (Figure 3).
15. Replace the two halves of the trim cover around the steering column.
16. Replace the lower trim panel.
17. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery, turn the fog lamp switch on and cycle the headlamps to make sure the fog lamps will only operate when the headlamps are in the low beam mode.
