EEC IV TESTING

A new adapter cable is required for the Self-Test Automatic Readout Device (Rotunda 007-00010) when interfacing to "all EEC IV equipped powertrains". It will also interface to all MCU equipped powertrains current and past model. The new cable incorporates a "Wiggle Test" for tracing intermittent problems. The Wiggle Test is described in sections 16 through 23, Volume H, of the Car Shop Manual (Engine/Electronics). The new Star (007-00004) has the modified cable included.

Figure 9:

INSTRUMENT GAUGE TESTING

A new Instrument Gauge System Tester (Rotunda 021-00034) (Figure 9) is available to accomodate the new "low profile connectors". It will troubleshoot all current and past model electronic and conventional gauge systems. The tester provides five levels of resistance measurement: 10 ohms, 23 ohms, 73 ohms, 150 ohms and 200 ohms. The following schematic identifies the new expanded connector selection.

DIESEL DIAGNOSTICS

The line of diesel diagnostic equipment released for 1983's 6.9L and 2.2L diesel equipment has been revised to accomodate the 1984 "2.4L and 2.0L Diesels". New adapters are available for those dealers with 6.9L/2.2L equipment to allow diagnosing 2.4L and 2.0L engines on the same equipment. Kits are also available for the dealer who does not have diesel service capability. The following chart shows the equipment and adapters required for each engine.

DIESEL - OVERHAUL

The following table lists the tools that are available to overhaul the "2.0L and 2.4L diesel" engines.

BODY SERVICE

A fixture kit supplement (Rotunda 022-00437) is available for "Tempo/Topaz" vehicles. This supplement works in conjunction with the Escort/Lynx fixture set (Rotunda 022-00256) to adapt the set for both vehicle families. The supplement contains six new fixtures, four top plates and five spacer/support plates and pins. Three items from this supplement are required for "1983 & 1984" Escort/Lynx vehicles. The following chart lists the items and identifies the vehicles covered.
BODY SERVICE

A fixture set supplement, (Rotunda 022-00458) is available for the new "Mark VII". This supplement works in conjunction with the Fox Fixture Set (Rotunda 022-00176) to adapt the set for the Mark VII. The supplement contains four fixtures.

DING & DENT REMOVAL

"All Models" - The company has distributed a video disc which demonstrates a new method of metal surface repair that does not require metal sanding, grinding, filling or repainting. The video disc is titled "Cosmetic Paint and Surface Repairs". The method for removing dings and dents described in this video disc requires a special set of tools. These tools are demonstrated on the video disc and are available through Rotunda (019-00006).

WHEEL ALIGNMENT

The "Mark VII" has an air suspension system that requires special procedures to assure proper vehicle leveling before wheel alignment readings may be taken. The procedure is detailed in section 14-40-5 of Volume B of the Passenger Car Shop Manual. The procedure for use with any Rotunda (or alternate) alignment system is:
Adjustments:

This adjustment procedure must be used prior to alignment, pinion angle or ride height checking. This method causes the system to perform a vent to trim.

NOTE: If vehicle is significantly colder or warmer than alignment area (20~ greater differential) time must be allowed for the vehicle to warm or cool to the temperature of the alignment area prior to Steps 1, 2 and 3.

1. Drive onto alignment rack, position vehicle, turn ignition OFF and exit vehicle.
2. Level rack as required, re-enter vehicle and turn ignition to RUN position (do not start).
3. Allow one minute for vehicle to level, then push trunk release, turn ignition to the OFF position and exit vehicle.
4. Allow 20 seconds for vehicle to vent to trim height (all doors must be closed) then turn air suspension system switch to the OFF position (in trunk on LH side).
5. Check alignment (pinion angle) per specified procedures.

Alignment

Refer to Section 14-01 for procedure and specifications.

Driveshaft-Pinion Angle

Refer to Section 14-32 for procedure and specifications.

ENGINE SEALING

RTV - type "C" (E3E M4G 195-C) is now available in six ounce cartridges for the Rotunda Gasket Gun (071-00001). Gasket Compound is available in 12 six ounce cartridges (071-00002) and 24 six ounce cartridges (071-00003). The gasket gun now incorporates an air pressure regulator which also is available separately (071 -0004). RTV sealant (E3E M4G 195-C) is used on the following engine applications:

^ 2.3L HSC - Oil Pan
^ 2.3L OHC EFI Turbo - Valve Rocker Arm Cover
^ 3.8L Oil Pan, Valve Rocker Arm Cover and Intake Manifold End Seals
^ 5.0L Valve Rocker Arm Cover
^ 6.9L Diesel Water Pump to Front Cover Seal

LIQUID GASKET APPLICATION CHART AND BOLT TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS:

The following chart lists the appropriate torque specifications to be used for these applications:
WARNING!
^ Uncured product will irritate eyes. In case of contact with eyes, immediately flush eyes with water for 1 5 minutes and get medical attention.
^ Product releases alcohol during application and curing. Use with adequate ventilation to prevent irritation to the respiratory tract by vapor.
^ Uncured product will irritate lips, gums and tongue.
^ Uncured product may irritate the skin. Wipe from skin with a dry cloth or paper towel, then wash with soap and water.
^ Keep out of reach of children.

TIPS ON THE PROPER USE OF ROTUNDA RTV ADHESIVE

^ This RTV is prescribed for use on only the components mentioned on the application chart. Usage in unprescribed areas could result in severe engine damage. DO NOT use for head gaskets.
^ Cover the open tip with the plastic covers provided between applications to prevent hardening.
^ Remove dirt, grease and moisture from surfaces to be sealed.
^ Components can be reassembled immediately after RTV is applied.
^ DO NOT over apply RTV - application nozzle dispenses 1/8" bead which is enough for most jobs.
^ DO NOT use RTV for assembling automatic or manual transmissions, or rear axles. Part number E1FZ-19562-A is recommended for these applications. Refer to TSB 81-11, Article No. 13 for further information. *The RTV dispenser can also be used with the Escort/Lynx windshield sealing kit part no. E0ZA- 19562-A.
^ Most applications (valve covers and oil pans) should be applied to the component - not on the engine.

WHEEL SERVICE

"Mark VII" vehicles have a low tire pressure sensing stem in the wheel. When mounting these wheels on any tire changer; DO NOT place the stem at the three o'clock or nine o'clock position or the sensing stem base will be damaged.

TORQUE CONVERTER AND OIL COOLER CLEANING

The Rotunda Torque Converter and Oil Cooler Cleaner (014-00028) has a new adapter set (014-00405) to address "C4 and C5 automatic transmissions" and the new quick disconnect oil cooler lines. The adapter kit also addresses "H" bypass and auxiliary cooling fittings.

VEHICLE LIFTING

When lifting "Mark VII" vehicles with stationary hoists or portable lifting equipment, turn off air suspension control system before starting the lifting operation. The switch is located on the trim panel in the trunk. It is marked with a yellow label.

KEY CUTTING AND BLANKS

A new 10 code key is being introduced. This new key contains 10 codes in approximately the same space that contains six codes on other Ford keys. The new coding system requires a new narrow cutting wheel (Rotunda 011-00118) for the Rotunda Key Duplicator (011-00001). The Rotunda Key Code Cutter (011-00003) will also require an adapter set (011-00117) for the narrow codes. The new key blank for the 10 code system is Rotunda 011-00116.
