84ford11Article No. 84-16-7
AIR CONDITIONING - LOSS OF REFRIGERANT - VEHICLES WITH HR-80 COMPRESSOR BUILT BETWEEN OCTOBER 10, 1983 AND MAY 18, 1984
FORD 1984 LTD, THUNDERBIRD, MUSTANG W/2.3L AND 3.8L ENGINES
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 MARQUIS, COUGAR, CAPRI W/2.3L AND 3.8L ENGINES
Insufficient or no cooling due to a low or no refrigerant charge could be caused by a concern at the seal supplier.
NOTE: A shaft seal leak may be intermittent and may not be detected until after vehicle has set for a few minutes with the engine off.
Use compressed air to blow any existing refrigerant from the under hood area. Wait five minutes and then leak test the refrigerant system.
If a refrigerant leak is found, service the leak as necessary and repeat the leak test. If no refrigerant leak is found and the vehicle was built between 10/10/83 and 5/18/84, install a new shaft seal in the compressor following the procedures given in the 1984 Shop Manual.
NOTE: All suspected non-quality shaft seal kits have been removed from the Depot stock. All shaft seal kits for the HR-80 compressor received in dealer stock prior to 6/1/84 should be returned to the stocking Depot.
