SWITCH, INERTIA - ELECTRIC FUEL
PUMP - CAN BE ACTIVATED BY SLAMMING THE DECK LID - 2.3L TURBO EFI AND 3.8L, 5.0L CFI ENGINES
FORD
1984 MUSTANG, 3-DOOR, 2-DOOR, CONVERTIBLE
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 CAPRI, 3-DOOR, 2-DOOR
Because of the production location of the electric fuel pump inertia switch on 1984 3-door Mustang/Capri, 2-door Mustang and convertible with 2.3L turbo charged EFI, 3.8L and 5.0L CFI engines, it can be activated by slamming the deck lid causing a no start condition. This condition can be serviced by relocating the inertia switch to an area that is not susceptible to vibration caused by deck lid slamming.
This condition was corrected in production on 10/14/83. The 1984 Shop Manual, Section 24-35-7 and 24-35-8 should be updated to reflect the following procedure:

FIGURE 10:

2-DOOR MUSTANG AND CONVERTIBLE
1. Remove the inertia switch from the spare tire wheel well and discard the shield (Figure 7).
2. Using either Template No. 1 (Figure 9) for Mustang Convertible or Template No. 2 (Figure 10) for Mustang 2-door models, drill two (2) 3/16" diameter holes in the left hand inner rear rail extension.
NOTE: It is very important that the switch be installed straight-up-and-down with rest lever button on top.
FIGURE 8:
3. Install the inertia switch on the outer side of the rail extension using a U-bolt (Part No. E4VE-11N523- AA) and (2) Nut & Washer Assy. (Part No. N621900-S36) (Figure 8).
FIGURE 7:
4. Peel back a sufficient amount of tape from the wire loom to allow inertia switch wiring and connector to reach the new location of the switch (Figure 7).
NOTE: Wire loom must be retaped after installation.
5. Check reset button on switch to make sure it is in the down position.
6. Seal holes in wheel wells with silicone sealer.

3. Using either Template No. 3 (Figure 11) for Mustang or Template No. 4 (Figure 12) for Capri drill two (2) 1/8" diameter holes in the lower left hand side of the back panel and install switch using
(2) screws (Part No. 55978-S45) (Figure 8).
CAUTION: WHEN DRILLING THE MOUNTING HOLES USE A 3/4 INCH DEPTH STOP ON DRILL BIT TO PREVENT DAMAGING THE TAIL LAMP HOUSING.
NOTE: It is very important that the inertia switch be installed straight-up-and-down with reset lever button on top.
FIGURE 13:
4. Any loose wires that are routed above the inertia switch must be taped up so as not to interfere with the function of the inertia switch reset button.
5. Using Template No. 5 (Figure 13) cut a one inch diameter access hole in the trim panel for the inertia switch reset button.
NOTE: The stand off support at the left bottom of trim panel is in line with the new location of the inertia switch; therefore, a portion of the support may have to be notched for proper installation of trim panel.
6. After installing the trim panel make sure the reset button can be reached thru the access hole. Install plug button (Part No. 386868-S) in access hole.
7. Seal holes in wheel well with silicone sealer.
