During the assembly process substantial amounts of axle and hydraulic lubricant may be splashed on the axle housings. Most of the residual lubricate is located in the area of the pinion seal. This condition has been misdiagnosed as pinion seal leaks, resulting in unnecessary pinion seal replacements.
When a pinion seal leak is suspected, check the seal carefully to make sure that it is actually the seal that is leaking. If there is doubt as to the source of the leak, the axle housing exterior should be cleaned with an approved solvent and the seal rechecked after mileage accumulation.
NOTE: Low axle lubricant level may indicate a leak. Check the lubricant level to see if it is below the specified point relative to the filler plug hole.
