Coolant Temperature Gauge - Reading In Red Region
Article No. 85-16-3GAUGE - COOLANT TEMPERATURE - READING IN RED REGION - VEHICLES WITH 2.3L EFI TURBO ENGINE BUILT BETWEEN 9/18/84 AND 3/8/85
FORD 1984-85 THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984-85 COUGAR
Some vehicles with the 2.3L EFI turbo engine may have the coolant temperature gauge read in the red region during long idle conditions, before the cooling fan motor runs on, with the A/C or defroster switches in the OFF position. This condition may be the result of the top coolant temperature running 15-20 degrees hotter than the engine temperature at the fan switch location. To resolve this condition, install a new temperature switch with a lower coolant calibration as follows:
1. Check the coolant level in the coolant overflow bottle for proper fill level and check for leaks in the cooling system.
2. Check the electro-drive fan for function by placing the climate control selector in the A/C mode to verify that the electro-drive fan is operating. If not functioning, see 1985 Car Shop Manual D, Powertrain Lubrication and Maintenance, Section 27-10 Fan, Electro-Drive Cooling.
3. If all the above checks are OK, then replace the electro-drive fan temperature switch located in the lower intake manifold, rear side, with a new (E5SZ- 8B607-A) cooling fan switch. This switch turns the electro-drive fan on at 210~F instead of 221~F.
