In the event that an inoperative or non-parking wiper motor is traced to an open ground circuit, it is no longer necessary to replace the entire wiper motor assembly. A new ground wire and insert kit is available under part number E43Z-17C504-A. Before replacing a motor, use the following procedure for diagnosis and service (Figures 5 and 6).
1. Provide a separate ground for the wiper motor by attaching a jumper wire between a known good vehicle ground and the wiper motor case.
2. Cycle wipers several times with the stalk wiper switch and observe for proper operation.
^ If wipers operate properly, problem was due to incomplete ground connection. Go to step 3.
^ If wipers fail to operate properly, use normal wiper system diagnostics to isolate malfunction.
^ If inoperative component is wiper motor, replace motor.
^ Otherwise, replace/service necessary component and proceed to step 3 to assure that no future incomplete ground circuit occurs.
3. Remove grommet insert and ground wire and clean grommet.
4. Install new grommet insert and ground wire contained in Service Kit E43Z-17C504-A.
NOTE: Do not use any lubricant when installing now grommet insent.
5. Torque 1/4 inch ground wire/motor cup screw to 15-30 lb.in.
6. Torque motor mounting bolt to 60-85 lb.in.
7. Verify proper wiper operation.
