Speaker Indicator Light, Tape Player and Premium Sound

Speaker Indicator Light Inoperative or Flickering (AM and FM Reception are OK)

^ Be sure that the radio is a stereo model and not monaural type.
^ Verify that the customer is listening to stereo stations.
^ A weak or distant signal may cause the stereo indicator light to flicker. Tune the radio to a nearby FM stereo station. If reception is good but the stereo indicator light is still intermittent, remove the radio chassis for service.
^ Intermittent FM stereo indicator light operation is sometimes caused by a defective AM/FM bandswitch. If normal operation can be restored by switching back and forth from AM to FM several times, radio should be removed for service and this condition should be noted on service tag.

Tape Player Will Not Accept Cartridge, Eats Tape, Plays Too Fast or Too Slow, etc. (AM and FM Operating Properly)

^ Be sure tape cassette has not come to the end of the tape.
^ Check operation of tape player by using a known good cassette/cartridge.
^ If the condition is not corrected by substitution of a known good cassette/cartridge, the radio chassis must be removed and sent to an authorized service facility for service.

NOTE: Customers experiencing tape player concerns as a result of defective tape (cassette/cartridge)
should be advised of the following precautions to avoid future difficulty:
- Never store tapes in direct sunlight.
- On cold days, allow radio and tapes to warm up in the passenger compartment before using.
- Do not use cassette tapes that are over 60 minutes in length (30 minutes/side).
- Perdiodically check pinch roller in 8-track cartridges. If rubber becomes soft or gummy, cartridge should be discarded.
- Clean tape player heads and capstan (8-track) periodically with isopropyl alcohol.
- Remove tapes from player when they are not in use.

Premium Sound System Does Not Operate Properly

^ If indicator light does not work, the amplifier will not go into the boost mode. (Note: Lamp assembly is LED and will show continuity in one direction only).
^ The Premium Sound amplifier is used to drive the speakers at all times, whether or not the switch is turned on. During the test, if there is no sound from one or more speakers while the radio is turned on, refer to the Premium Sound service manual for further assistance.
^ The most common cause of failure in the Premium Sound system is defective wiring. Before replacing component parts, inspect connectors for proper mating and check for cut or pinched wiring. Defective wiring may cause distortion, low volume or no sound from one or more speakers.
^ If inspection of wiring does not reveal cause for failure, check the control for loose wires or broken parts. Continuity checks on the switch may be made by referring to the Premium Sound System service manual.
^ Premium Sound speakers are analyzed in the same manner as standard speakers.
