DOOR - TAILGATE - DISENGAGES FROM UPPER L.H. HINGE

FORD 1982/83/84 CROWN VICTORIA STATION WAGON

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1982/83/84 GRAND MARQUIS STATION WAGON

Figure 1:

Some 1982/83 Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis station wagons may exhibit the tailgate door disengaging from the upper L.H. hinge when used as a door. If this concern is encountered, visually inspect the lever position of the upper L.H. hinge on the tailgate to determine whether or not the lever is fully seated in the correct design position (Figure 1). If the lever is not positioned beyond the mid-point of the hinge pin, the following adjustment is to be made:
1. Open the tailgate as a gate.
2. Remove the tailgate inside handle assembly and trim panel.
3. Close upper R.H. latch on tailgate.

Figure 2:

4. Disconnect the upper hinge link rod retainer clip from the lock release control assembly, Figure 2.
5. With the upper hinge release link rod in normal position, turn the adjuster on the threaded end of the rod so that it can be aligned and easily inserted into the lock release control assembly lever.
6. Lock the retainer clip assembly over the threaded rod and loosely install the inside handle.
7. Open upper R.H. latch on tailgate.
8. Function the tailgate as a gate to assure that gate is not binding and latches lock and unlock properly.
9. Function the tailgate as a door to assure that it opens and closes without disengagement. The door must lock and unlock and the window must open and close when properly adjusted.
10. If hinge and/or striker adjustment is necessary, refer to the 1983 Car Shop Manual, Section 44-76 for instructions.
11. Install trim panel.
