If the tailgate is closed as a "gate" and the upper hinge does not engage properly, and if the tailgate is then used as a "door", complete disengagement could occur. Inadequate thread engagement of the release rod to rod adjuster results in this condition.

Dealers encountering this condition in vehicles built prior to October 15, 1983 should replace the hinge release rod D9AZ-74431E58-A. Refer to Figure 11 and the 1984 Car Shop Manual, Section 44-26-1 for removal and installation instructions. Note alignment and adjustment of the tailgate procedures are published in TSB 83-19-1 dated September 20, 1983.
