FORD 1981-84 ESCORT, EXP
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1981-84 LYNX, LN7
The following service procedure is to be used for front end vibration and/or shudder only after wheels and tires have been verified to be within specifications. This procedure (1) confirms: that the axle shaft(s) and hub(s) are free of damage, and (2) confirms proper shaft spline mesh which, if not seated, may cause shudder/vibration concerns.
Separate the outboard CV joint stub shaft(s) from the brake hub(s). Visually inspect hub splines, stub shaft splines for proper seating of the spline mesh and spline mating surfaces for damage. If the surfaces are not damaged, re-index the hub to stub shaft spline mesh 180~ from original location and reinstall. This procedure will properly seat stub shaft splines in the hub.
Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual - Powertrain -Section 15 service instructions.
NOTE: Additional NVH diagnoses are contained in Technical Service Bulletin 82-2, dated 1/29/82.
