GLOW PLUGS - ERRATIC OPERATION - 2.0L DIESEL - CORROSION OF WIRING CONNECTOR

TACHOMETER - ERRATIC OPERATION - 2.0L DIESEL CORROSION OF WIRING CONNECTOR

FORD 1984-85 ESCORT, TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984-85 LYNX, TOPAZ

During cold, wet weather driving, erratic operation of the glow plugs and/or the tachometer may be caused by moisture entering and corroding the 14290 to 14289 wiring connectors. This causes the "after glow" indicator lamp not to go out during engine idle, although the thermo-switch is working properly and the coolant temperature is above 86~F. The tachometer may also vary from zero to 2000 RPM due to the corrosion.

To correct this, the wiring harness connectors should be separated and the corroded wires butt-spliced together using the "duraseal" butt-splice connectors (E6FZ-14488-A), as outlined below.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

Figure 10:

2. Locate the 14290 to 14289 connectors on the bulkhead, Figure 10.

3. Separate the connectors and inspect them for grayish-colored corrosion, Figures 11, 12, and 13.

4. Remove the corroded wires from the connectors and butt-splice them together using the "duraseal" butt-splice connectors (E6FZ-14488-A). Refer to TSB 86-3-11 for installation instructions of the butt-splice connectors.

5. Make sure that ground circuit #57 is properly secured.

6. Reconnect the battery ground cable and make sure the condition has been corrected.
