SHEET METAL - "B" PILLAR -

COSMETIC CRACK AT BELT LINE - REVISED TO INCLUDE 1981-1986 VEHICLES (MODEL 61)

FORD 1981-86 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1981-86 LYNX

This article is being republished to include all model year applications. The following is an improved service procedure for cosmetic cracks in the "B" pillar on the subject vehicles. This article cancels and supersedes TSB Article 83-4-2. Belt line cracks can now be serviced by installing a quarter panel reinforcement to the affected area. These parts must be sweat-soldered to the "B" pillar as outlined below.

1. Procure the following:
(1) E2FZ-6128701-A L.H. and/or
(1) E2FZ-6128700-A R.H. quarter panel patch.

2. Remove decorative "B" pillar finish panel by sliding forward.

Figure 5:

3. Refer to Figure 5 and position quarter panel patch to "B" pillar. Scribe a line around patch to give a general indication of patch location on the "B" pillar.

4. Apply body tape or masking tape to protect the quarter window weatherstrip from heat applied to the service area of "B" pillar.

5. Prepare the area by sanding to bare metal.

6. Position patch to "B" pillar surface. While holding in position, tap the patch as required to ensure a snug fit.

NOTE: The following steps (7 through 10) describe the procedure to sweat-solder the entire surface of the patch to the "B" pillar. Do not merely solder the patch around its periphery.

7. Acid clean the pillar surface and rear surface of patch.

8. Tin the pillar and rear surface of patch with AMOCO No. 2805 tinning compound or equivalent.

9. Heat metal and apply a liberal amount of 50-50 solder to both pillar and patch.

10. Apply patch to pillar, heat and work solder around perimeter. Hold patch firmly in position using screwdriver or equivalent tool until work area cools.

11. Grind service area smooth. Metal finish using a moisture resistant polyester filler (Duraglass by U.S. Chemicals and Plastics Company, or equivalent).

12. Finish sand, prime and paint (body color) the service area.

13. Reinstall decorative "B" pillar finish panel.
