AIR CONDITIONING - DEALER INSTALLED - ENGINE COMPONENT KIT E4FZ-19B969-A
FORD 1984 ESCORT
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 LYNX
Alternator front housing ear breakage in conjunction with the installation of Dealer Installed Air Conditioning kits on 1984 Escort/Lynx 1.6L engines may be the result of improper installation procedure. The 1984 base alternator housing was commonized with the A/C alternator and includes a narrower mounting ear when compared to the 1983 alternator. Applying a wrench to the alternator ear and/or over-torquing the adjustment arm bolt is not an acceptable procedure and will most likely fracture the mounting ear.
FIGURE 7:
The following procedure must be followed when installing the alternator on the subject engine kit (See Figure 7).
^ Loosely (hand tighten) install the compressor brace to the engine.
^ Loosely (hand tighten) install the alternator bracket to the compressor. The compressor brace mounts (outside) to the upper right hole of the alternator bracket.
^ Install alternator on bracket using the original trunion bolt.
^ Insert two 3/8" flat washers between the adjusting arm and the compressor mount, and loosely fasten alternator adjustment arm to compressor mount.
^ The slotted end of the adjustment arm is attached to the alternator front housing ear using one 3/8" flat washer between the arm and the alternator ear and the original equipment bolt and washer assembly.
^ Install belt and make certain the alternator is correctly aligned before tightening any bolts.
^ Tension the belt to 150-190 lbs. and tighten the adjustment arm bolt to 24-34 ft.lbs.
Engine component kits built after March 19, 1984, will have a slightly redesigned adjustment arm which will eliminate the need for the two 3/8" flat washers at the compressor mount.
