TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

RECALL 89S66


A crack on an external surface of the cylinder head requires replacement of the cylinder head assembly.

INSPECTION

Carefully inspect the entire outer surface of the head for cracks.

External cracks may be found on the exhaust side of cylinder # 3 running from the exhaust port, between # 3 and # 4 spark plug pockets up to the rocker arm cover sealing surface. Cracks may also be found on other exterior surfaces of the head.

- If no cracks are found, complete Form 1864 and release car.

- If any cracks are found, mark the location of all cracks with a colored pen, daub of paint or other method to clearly show the crack.

- Wire tag head and water pump. Write your dealership name and P & A code, VIN number and "Recall 89S66- on the wire tag. Attach a copy of Form 1864 to the tag.

- Put cracked head in box the new head came in and hold it and water pump for Field Service Engineer inspection.


REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Do not disassemble removed head. The replacement head is shipped as a complete assembly.

Follow 1984 Shop Manual procedures for removal and installation


of:


- Cylinder head
- Water pump
- Timing belt
- Engine oil
- Oil filter

Scrap the removed timing belt. Complete Form 1864 and release car.
