SUBJECT: Safety Recall 89S66 - 1984 1.6 Liter 2V HO Engine, Cylinder Head External Crack - Inspection/Replacement

VEHICLES AFFECTED
All 1984 Escort/Lynx/EXP with 1.6L 2V HO engines.
REASON FOR RECALL
An external crack may occur in the cylinder head on some of these engines. An external crack in the head may allow engine oil to leak onto the exhaust manifold. Oil leaking onto a hot exhaust manifold could under certain conditions, ignite and may reglut in an engine compartment fire.

Only cylinder heads having external cracks are to be replaced.
REIMBURSEMENTS:
CUSTOMER PAID CYLINDER HEAD REPLACEMENT
DISTRICT/SUPERVISING FORD LOCATION APPROVAL - REIMBURSEMENTS

OWNER REQUESTS FOR REIMBURSEMENTS FOR PREVIOUS HEAD REPLACEMENTS DUE TO EXTERNAL CRACKS, SHOULD BE REFERRED TO THE DISTRICT OFFICE FOR APPROVAL. OWNERS MUST SHOW PROOF OF PRIOR REPAIR (PAID WORK ORDER, PARTS PURCHASE RECEIPT, ETC.)

DISTRICT/SUPERVISING FORD LOCATION APPROVAL IS LIMITED TO 25% OF OWNER PAID COSTS WHEN LOCATION OF HEAD CRACK IS NOT CLEARLY IDENTIFIED AS "EXTERNAL".
IMPORTANT NOTE: IF AN AFFECTED CAR DEVELOPS A CYLINDER HEAD EXTERNAL CRACK ANY TIME AFTER THIS RECALL INSPECTION IS COMPLETED, CONTACT YOUR DISTRICT OFFICE OR SUPERVISING FORD LOCATION FOR INSTRUCTIONS. DO NOT REPLACE THE HEAD BEFORE CONTACTING THE APPROPRIATE SUPERVISING OFFICE.
