The 1.6L water pump is currently being replaced by the 1.9L design for service. The current part number E3FZ- 8501-B (water pump assembly) will still be retained, but the 1.9L pump will now be supplied with special installation instructions for servicing the timing belt tensioner spring. The use of two pump base gaskets (8507) is also specified by the instructions.

^ The 1.9L water pump design replaces all previous 1.6L service water pump designs that provided a pin or a counterbore pocket to retain the timing belt tensioner spring (Figure 10).
Figure 11 - Tensioner:
^ A flat pad is now provided on this new pump as a seat for the tensioner spring. The spring will maintain the same position and load provided by the pin or counterbore design and can be used with both the aluminum or the cast iron type tensioners (Figure 11).
^ The two base gaskets (8507) supplied with this pump must both be used to prevent possible pump impeller interference with the 1.6L engine block.

Old dealer stock of E3FZ-8501-B will contain either an aluminum pump having a pin type seat for the tensioner spring or a cast iron pump having a counter bore seat (Figure 10). Do not use two gaskets on these pumps.
