Hard Start - Hesitation/Stumble/Stall until engine warms up can be caused by a shorted or inoperative EFE heater spacer. A burr on the intake may short the EFE heater spacer electrical circuit, and the resulting current draw would then overload the fuse link that protects the alternator. This condition is suspected to exist on a small percentage of the engine built from June 30, 1984 through August 3, 1984.
FIGURE 13:
From the engine decal, determine if the engine was built during the above time period. If so, disconnect the EFE heater spacer electrical connector from the harness, and test for a short to ground by using an Ohmmeter as shown in Figure 13. The meter reading should be greater than 0.8 Ohms minimum (1.4 to 2.4 Ohms is typical.) If the meter reading is less than 0.8 Ohms, procure new EFE spacer E3FZ-9F732-A and fuse link D3AZ-14526-G (blue 20 gage), then proceed as follows:
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
2. Remove the carburetor from the vehicle (refer to the shop manual for removal and installation procedures), then remove he damaged EFE heater spacer, which is to be returned through the warranty return system.
FIGURE 14:
3. Eliminate the slightly raised burr on the intake manifold (Reference: Figure 14) by lightly and carefully tapping it down with the rounded end of a ball peen hammer.
CAUTION: Do not allow foreign material to drop into the intake manifold; and do not hammer hard enough to dent the manifold, causing a vacuum leak.
4.Install the new EFE heater spacer, and reinstall the carburetor to the vehicle.
5. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
6. Shut the engine off, and reinstall the cleaner assembly.
FIGURE 15:
7. Splice the new fuse link into the electrical system as shown in Figure 15, with the eyelet connected to the starter relay terminal. For installation procedures, refer to the 1984 Shop Manual, Volume C, pages 34-30-3 and 4.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
