LOCKS - FRONT DOOR - HIGH KEY AND UNLATCHING EFFORTS WITH POWER DOOR LOCKS

FORD 1984 ESCORT - MODEL 58-74 WITH POWER DOOR LOCKS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 LYNX - MODEL 58-74 WITH POWER DOOR LOCKS

Some early production vehicles may exhibit high key and unlatching efforts. This concern is caused by the lock power actuator pulling the lock rod and bellcrank into an over center locking mode. To service, replace the existing power door lock actuator systems in both front doors. The new system eliminates the bellcrank and short latch rod and replaces them with a new actuator with a longer rod connecting direct to the latch attachment for more positive operations.

FIGURE 5:

Removal:

1. Remove door trim panel and watershield.
2. Remove the pop-rivets attaching the bellcrank assembly (21848-9) and power actuator (218A42) to the door (Figure 5, View A).
3. Disconnect the door latch actuator rod (20A26) from the latch.
4. Disconnect the wiring connector from the power actuator.
5. Remove the rod, bellcrank and power actuator from the vehicle.

NOTE: The yellow clip (389666-S) can be re-used to attach new power actuator rod to latch lever.

Installation:

1. Connect wire assembly (14024-5) to new design power actuator (E4FZ-74218A42-B - R.H.), (E4FZ-74218A43-A - L.H.) and attach power actuator bracket to door with a 388047-S101 poprivet. (Dealers may also use a Townsend-Textron (Cherry Div.) pop-rivet BSLT-8-125 or an N802034-SG pop-rivet as alternates.)
2. Insert the actuator rod lever into the latch lever and assure that the plastic swing clip (389666-S) is fully engaged over the rod (Figure 5, View B).
3. Remove the cowl side trim panels (02344-5).

Disconnect connector 503 (RH) and 504 (LH) and reverse wire 118 (pink with orange dot) with wire 117 (pink with black dot). Refer to Figure 6.

FIGURE 7:

FIGURE 8:

NOTE: To reverse the wires it is necessary to depress the red tab on the side of each connector and pull out the red spacer within the center of the connector. Press prongs within connector away from wire end and pull wire from the connector. Insert wires fully into connector for positive retention and slide red spacer into connector until red tab locks into side slot of connector (Figures 7 and 8 show connector locations).

5. Cycle each power lock system to assure correct lock/unlock modes.
6. Reinstall cowl side trim panels.
7. Reinstall door watershield and trim panel.
8. Install a plastic push pin (388577-S) or rubber plug button (377934-S) into sheet metal hole which retained the bellcrank rivet.
