CALIBRATIONS: All with EFI
Engine spark knock that occurs at higher ambient temperatures can be serviced by replacement of the E.C.A. after checking the ignition timing, the fuel and the cooling systems.
1. Verify the proper grade of fuel is being used, the specified coolant level is maintained, and initial timing is not advanced from specification.
2. Retard the initial timing up to a maximum of 3~ from the timing specified on the engine decal by installing a 3~ retard rod.
3. For an LTD or Marquis with AOD transmission only, replace the 1-row radiator assembly with a 2-row as described in TSB 84-13.
4. Road test vehicle; if the spark knock persists, replace the EEC IV processor and reset the initial timing to specification 10~ BTDC.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
