84ford13 Article No. 84-14-9

OVERHEATING (3.8L) - DURING HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES ( + 95~ AND ABOVE) AND PROLONGED IDLE - EQUIPPED WITH A/C AND AOD TRANSMISSION

FORD 1983-84 LTD

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-84 MARQUIS

Condition of the engine temperature warning light coming on with no loss of coolant during high ambient temperatures and prolonged idle mode may be serviced by installing service radiator and, on some vehicles, radiator air deflectors.

Replace the radiator using part number E4DZ-8005-A.

NOTE: It is important that the proper coolant level is maintained in the coolant overflow reservoir. The 1983 vehicles should have a minimum of 2"-3" of coolant in the reservoir when cool. The 1984 vehicles should be maintained between "Add" and "Full Hot" marks.

Figure 6:

On vehicles built prior to 1/4/84, install right and left. radiator air deflectors as shown (Figure 6).

Verify that engine initial timing is set to specification.

Verify that the engine hot idle speed is set to specification.

NOTE: If vehicle usage applies to heavy traffic stop and go driving for long periods of time in hot weather, owner should be advised to occasionally place the gearshift selection in P (Park) or N (Neutral) to increase the engine idle speed. This aids in engine cooling and air conditioner efficiency.
