DIESELING - 3.8L - ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
FORD 1984 LTD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 MARQUIS
CALIBRATIONS: 3.8L Canada only
An engine dieseling condition can be caused by an improperly wired connector at the anti-diesel relay.
If engine dieseling is experienced, the following steps should be taken to insure that the anti-diesel relay wires are not crossed in the connector before performing normal (engine dieseling) diagnostic procedures.
1. Locate the anti-diesel relay mounted under the hood on the right hand fender apron at the front of the shock tower.
FIGURE 4:
2. Using Figure 4, check circuits 332 (white) and 347 (black/yellow hash) to make sure they are installed properly in the connector.
3. If relay connector is wired correctly, no further action is required. Proceed with normal (engine dieseling) diagnostic procedures.
4. If the wiring for the relay connector does not agree with Figure 4, remove the connector from the relay and reverse circuits 332 and 347. Reinstall connector.
NOTE: Until the old service stock of the 14289 wire harness is depleted, it will be necessary when installing a new 14289 wire harness on the subject vehicle to check for crossed wires at the anti-diesel relay connector and correct, if necessary.
