DOOR - FUEL FILLER - MANUAL OVERRIDE CABLE - HANGS UP
- MODELS WITHOUT LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM
FORD 1983-84 LTD, MUSTANG
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-84 MARQUIS
FIGURE 1:
This concern is caused by the manual override cable being pulled in a direction 90~ to the fuel filler door latch. The finger (retaining cable) on the latch housing (designed to keep the override cable in the slot in the end cap), may break when the cable is pulled in a direction 90~ to the latch, allowing the cable to hang-up between the housing and the end cap. This results in an unlocked fuel filler door. To service this concern, install a tie strap (part no. 95832-S) around both the override cable and the main cable per Figure 1.
NOTE: Until such time as the old design service part stock is depleted, it will be necessary when installing a new latch assembly to check the housing for the reinforced retaining finger (See Figure 1). If the latch housing does not have the "T" shaped reinforced retaining finger, a tie strap must be installed before installing the new latch assembly.
Install tie strap around the two cables as shown in Figure 1. Override cable must move freely in the tie strap loop.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
