SHEET METAL - SEAL - QUARTER PANEL TO WHEELHOUSE AT FUEL FILLER OPENING

When servicing right side quarter panels a unique seal is required to seal the quarter panel to wheelhouse at the fuel filler opening. Production vehicles utilize an elastomeric seal which expands and cures as the vehicle is processed through the paint ovens in the assembly plant. As this material is not compatible to service part processing or field service procedures, a new design seal is released for service. The seal can be obtained individually when required and will also be included in a kit with service only quarter panel assemblies. Service part numbers are listed with this article. The following outlines the seal installation procedure.

NOTE: Do not attempt to position or install the seal until all sheet metal services have been completed . It is essential that the seal mating areas of the outer wheelhouse panel and quarter panel be in proper alignment with correct spacing (almost touching around the complete periphery) when the quarter panel is installed on the car. Failure to do so can result in an improperly compressed seal which will allow gasoline, water and dust to enter the luggage compartment.

1. Make sure the "D" ring area of the quarter panel and mating surface of the wheelhouse is clean.
2. Remove the seal from the protective package and peel off the adhesive protective paper.
3. Carefully position the seal to the quarter panel "D" ring and apply sufficient pressure to assure adhesion (Figure 4).

4. Position the quarter panel to the car. The seal should be compressed to half of its original height.
5. Apply a bead of black silicone rubber around the inside periphery of the wheelhouse opening where it mates with the quarter panel seal "D" ring as shown in Figure 5. This additional bead of sealer is applied from under the car and within the wheel opening area.
