Hard starting or poor performance in cold and snowy weather may be caused by a build up of snow or ice in the air cleaner plenum tray. A loop from the car heater can be installed in the tray to correct this condition.
1. Position the air cleaner upper tray cover out of the way and remove the element.
Figure 14:
2. In the air cleaner tray, drill a 15/64" hole in the location shown in Figure 14 for the retaining clip.
Figure 15:
3. Remove the 2 knockouts for the air cleaner heater tube inlet and outlet. The knockouts are located in the tray wall opposite the air inlet tube (Figure 15).
4. Install 2 grommets (381898-S) in the inlet and outlet openings of Step 2.
5. Attach the retaining clip (382931-S) to the heater tube and install the tube in the air cleaner tray. Install the retaining clip into the hole of Step #1.
6. Drain the cooling system.
7. Raise the vehicle.
8. Disconnect the heater hose at the water pump inlet and position the hose up to the top of the engine compartment.
9. Position and install the new hose (381201- S450-A) to air cleaner heater tube. Secure the hose with clamps (389736-S).
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Attach the two hoses (381201-S350A or S260A and S450A) to air cleaner heater tube. Secure the hose with clamps (389736-S).
12. For non-A/C vehicles only: Loosen the hose clamp at the heater core outlet and rotate the hose approximately 90~ toward the air cleaner. Cut the free end of the hose 8" from the end. Install the hose clamps (389736-S) and the reducer (18A568) and attach to the air cleaner hose (381201-S260A). Tighten the hose clamps.
13. For A/C vehicles only: Remove and discard the hose from the heater core outlet. Attach the hose from the air cleaner (381201-S350A) to the heater core outlet. Tighten the hose clamp.
