FORD 1984 ESCORT, TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 LYNX, TOPAZ

This article cancels and supersedes the published article 84-8-9, dated April 10, 1984, to include removal of the engine front covers and inspect for drive belt debris.

Alternator belt squeal noise or premature wear on the subject vehicles built prior to February 1, 1984, equipped with power steering and air conditioning may be caused by the power steering pump pulley being pressed too far on the shaft of the pump causing misalignment of the alternator belt.

^ Remove the power steering pump from the engine.
^ Install the pulley remover tool T69L-10300-B to the pump.
^ Hold the pump and rotate the tool nut counterclockwise to move the face of the pulley to within .010" from the end of the pump shaft.
^ Remove the upper and lower front timing belt covers. Inspect and remove any alternator belt debris that may have entered the timing belt area or behind the crankshaft or tensioner pulleys.
^ Install a new alternator belt (part no. E4FZ-8620-D) and adjust tension to 120-160 lbs.
