(SUMMARY OF MAJOR PROGRAM FEATURES)

Vehicles Involved

^ All 1984-model Tempo/Topaz and Escort/Lynx vehicles equipped with 2.0 liter diesel engines.

^ 1985-model Tempo/Topaz and Escort/Lynx vehicles equipped with 2.0 liter diesel engines and built from the start of 1985-model production through April 21, 1985 (Tempo/Topaz) and March 29, 1985 (Escort/Lynx).

Notification Of Owners Of Involved Vehicles

^ Owners of involved Escort/Lynx vehicles produced from start of 1984-model production through March 29, 1985, will be notified by the letter shown.

^ Owners of involved 1984 and 1985-model Tempo/Topaz vehicles produced from the start of 1984-model production through April 21, 1985, will be notified of this program under cover of Owner Notification Program M40 (Subject: Front Strut Upper Mount Bearings), which is being announced separately.

Repairs

Engine repairs required as a result of premature engine cylinder head gasket failures are covered under the program. Engine repairs required for reasons other than prematurely-failed engine cylinder head gaskets will not be covered under the program, but will be covered under any applicable vehicle warranty or will be performed at owners' expense. The inspection procedure described in Attachment II describes the engine oil leakage condition covered by this program.

^ IN A SMALL NUMBER OF CASES, IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE ENGINE ASSEMBLIES AS A RESULT OF PREMATURELY FAILED ENGINE CYLINDER HEAD GASKETS. YOU MUST HAVE AUTHORIZATION FROM YOUR FPSD DISTRICT OFFICE PRIOR TO REPLACING THE ENGINE ASSEMBLIES.

Owner Reimbursement

^ Reimbursement will be provided to owners of eligible vehicles for cylinder head gasket replacements and for engine repairs covered by the program that were performed at their expense prior to the announcement of this program.

^ Owners must request reimbursement from dealerships by March 31, 1986. Dealerships must submit owner reimbursement requests on separate warranty claim Forms 1863 by May 30, 1986.

^ Reimbursement includes the deductible amount owners may have paid under Ford Motor Company's 24-month/24,000-mile powertrain warranty, Ford's Extended Service Plan or any similar plan in effect on their vehicles.
