Owner Letter
October, 1985Dear Owner:
This is to advise you of a special Ford Motor Company service program to replace engine cylinder head gaskets on certain 1984 and 1985-model Escort/Lynx vehicles equipped with 2.0 liter diesel engines. Our records indicate that you own a vehicle covered by the program. The vehicle identification number is shown on the envelope that contained this letter. (If you own more than one affected vehicle, the vehicle identification numbers are shown on a listing enclosed with this letter.)
Reason for the Program:
The engine cylinder head gasket in your vehicle may permit oil to leak out of the lubricating passages. If the leakage is not detected or it is ignored, this condition could result in inadequate lubrication, possible overbeating and extensive engine damage. If your vehicle's engine should have this condition, you may notice engine oil leakage from the front corner of the engine on the passenger side of the engine compartment or on the surface beneath this area of the vehicle when it is parked. You also may notice engine oil in the coolant recovery bottle located in the passenger side of the engine compartment.
Description of Ford's Program:
Ford Motor Company is providing extended coverage for the engine cylinder head gasket for the described condition for five years from your vehicle's in-service date or 60,000 miles of operation, whichever comes first. Any engine damage resulting from the described gasket condition will also be repaired within this time/mileage limitation.
To Have This Service Performed:
Please retain this letter. Should your vehicle's cylinder head gasket experience the described condition or the engine require repair as the result of the gasket condition, within the indicated program time/mileage limitation, please contact any Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership to arrange an appointment to have the gasket replaced and, if necessary, the engine repaired. This service will be provided at no charge to you. We suggest that for future reference, you retain this letter in the glove compartment of your vehicle.
Reimbursement for Prior Repairs:
If you have already had the engine cylinder head gasket replaced, or had any engine repairs required as the result of oil leakage from the gasket performed at your expense prior to the announcement of this program, Ford will reimburse you for the costs of the parts and labor that you incurred. Reimbursement includes the deductible amount you may have paid under Ford Motor Company's 24-month/24,000-mile powertrain warranty, Ford's Extended Service Plan (ESP) or any similar plan in effect on your vehicle.
To request reimbursement, please present your paid repair order or over the-counter parts purchase receipt to any Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership by March 31, 1986. The dealership will make arrangements to reimburse you for the repair costs you incurred.
Ford Motor Company is taking this action as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain owner confidence in its products. We want you to be satisfied with your Ford-built vehicle and want you to know that we value you as a customer.
Also, for your information, we have shown the introduction announcement of the Ford Customer Information System. This system provides information on technical service bulletins and Ford-paid post warranty repair programs such as the engine cylinder head gasket program described in this letter.
