Group I Sail Mirrors and Cover Plates
When wind noise is encountered in the area of the sail mirrors or cover plates, the following steps should be taken to correct the condition.Figure 1:
THUNDERBIRD/COUGAR
1. Remove interior sail cover and check gasket. If gasket is 3/8" thick and not distorted in any way, the sealing of the interior sail cover is OK. If gasket is only 1/4" thick it must be built up by adding 1/4"x3/4" strips of foam tape to the existing gasket as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 2:
2. Remove the sail mirror and check gasket on mirror for latest design. (See Figure 2). If gasket is not of the latest design and is distorted in any way, it must be serviced and built up by adding 1/8"x3/4" strips of foam to existing gasket as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 3:
The O/S belt mouldings on early built units have (3) tabs in nose area that were used to locate the sail mirror. These tabs contribute to the dislocation of the sail mirror gasket. Therefore, if tabs are present they must be bent flush with door panel before remounting sail mirror. (Figure 3).
Figure 4:
4. Applies only to units without vent windows.
Pull front moulded corner of flocked run out of door frame and install a piece of 1/8"x 1/2" square piece of foam tape (fabricate by using two pieces of 3/4" wide tape). Also, install a piece of 1/4" square x 6" long foam tape behind the inner lip of the vertical portion of the flocked run, starting at the moulded corner and working down approximately 6" as shown in Figure 4.
NOTE: The 1/4" square foam tape that has to be installed under the inside sealing lip will extend approximately 2-1/2" below the belt line, therefore it may be necessary to remove the
door trim panel to facilitate installation.
Figure 5:
5. Applies only to units without R.H. mirror.
Perform Step #1 first, then remove outside sail cover and build up existing gasket by adding 1/4"x3/4" strips of foam tape as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 6:
TEMPO/TOPAZ
High Series
1. Remove interior sail cover plate and check for bent locating tab. Straighten tab if bent to allow proper seating of the cover plate to door panel (Figure 6).
2. The forward flange of the sail cover on early built units was approximately 1/4" wide and interfered with the door primary weatherstrip. If the forward flange measures more than 1/8" wide, the excess material should be trimmed off using a sharp knife (Figure 6).
Figure 7:
Low Series
NOTE: On low series vehicles the sail cover is an integral part of the door trim panel.
1. Early built units did not include a foam gasket behind the sail cover area. To check for the presence of a gasket, remove the attaching screw in the sail cover area and carefully pull the top edge away from door far enough to visually check for the presence of the gasket. If gasket is missing it will be necessary to remove the door trim panel to install gasket. Fabricate a gasket by using two layers of 1/4"x3/4" strips of foam tape as shown in Figure 7.
2. The forward flange of the sail cover area on early built units was approximately 1/4" wide and interfered with the door primary weatherstrip. If the forward flange measures more than 1/8" wide the excess material should be trimmed off using a sharp knife (Figure 7).

Low and High Series - 4 Door Only
Door mounted remote control mirrors (for correction of wind whistle only)
1. Check for the presence of a clear adhesive in the gap between the cover and body on the underside of the mirror. If adhesive is not visible, apply a thin bead of clear silicone rubber adhesive along the entire length of gap as shown in Figure 8.
NOTE: Mirror removal is not necessary.
Figure 9:
LTD/MARQUIS (With Mirror)
1. Early built units did not include a foam gasket behind the interior sail cover. Remove sail cover and
check for gasket. If gasket is missing it will be necessary to fabricate a gasket using 1/8"x3/4" strips of foam tape as shown in Figure 9.
Figure 10:
2. Remove sail mirror and apply body-caulk on outer perimeter of mirror attaching plate as shown in Figure 10.
NOTE: Must seal around lower tab.
3. Apply a piece of 1/4"x3/4"x3-3/4" long foam tape on top of door outer panel adjacent to mirror plate as shown in Figure 10.
Figure 11:
R.H. Without Mirror
1. Same as Step #1 (with mirror) except fabricate gasket using 1/4"x3/4" strips of foam tape (Figure 11).
Figure 12:
2. Remove outside sail cover and check gasket. If gasket is 1/4" thick, the sealing of the outer sail cover is OK. If gasket is only 1/8" thick it must be built up by adding 1/8"x3/4" strips of foam tape to existing gasket as shown in Figure 12.

3. Same as Step #2 (with mirror) see Figure 10.
