FUEL FILLER DOOR LATCH - REMOTE CONTROL - INOPERATIVE

FORD 1984 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 TOPAZ

If the remote control fuel filler door latch fails to open when temperature is in the freezing range, use the following steps to free up the latch plunger.

1. The vehicle should be brought inside to allow the latch plunger assembly to thaw out.
2. When vehicle is completely thawed, activate the system to verify that the latch plunger was only frozen in the housing.
3. If the fuel filler door remains locked, perform normal diagnostic procedures, such as blown fuse - shorted circuit - defective solenoid or kinked cable.

FIGURE 1:

4. If fuel filler door opens, the latch plunger should be wiped dry and silicone lubricant pan #D7AZ-19553- A (aerosol can) should be sprayed on plunger and into housing around plunger opening, as shown in Figure 1.
NOTE: Low temperature lubricant is now being applied to all production and service parts. However until such time as the old service stock is depleted, it will be necessary when installing a new latch assembly to check the plunger for the presence of lubricant. If the plunger has not been lubricated, apply the recommended lubricant before installing.
