HARD START/NO START & STALLS - 2.3L ENGINE

FORD 1984 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 TOPAZ

Engine hard start/no starts and stalls may be due to condensation restricting exhaust flow in the muffler.

Short drive cycles in cold weather conditions may cause the muffler to become filled with condensate (liquid), restricting the exhaust.

The following procedure has been developed to alleviate this condition:

FIGURE 27:

1. Raise the vehicle on hoist, 2. Drill a .125 (3.2 mm) hole through the lower part of the front muffler head. The hole location should be 3/8" from bottom edge of muffler (Figure 27).
CAUTION: WHEN PERFORMING THE ABOVE OPERATION, THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN.
1. Do not use an electric drill motor. (Use air type drill only).
2. Be sure the exhaust system is cool because water may drain after the hole has been drilled.
3. Safety glasses should be worn.
