Carburetor - Idles Rough/Stalls Cold

83ford7 Article No. 83-21-6

IDLES ROUGH/STALLS - COLD - 2.3L (HSC) - ALL CALIBRATIONS

FORD 1983-1/2 - 84 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-1/2 - 84 TOPAZ

Carburetor icing can occur at the idle transfer passage on the 2.3L HSC engine during cold driveaway when ambient temperatures are just above 32~ F with high humidity. This condition can be alleviated by installing a heated carburetor to intake manifold spacer.

1. Remove the wing nut and grommet, and move the air cleaner horn away from the carburetor.
2. Remove the carburetor assembly.
3. Remove and discard the carburetor-to-intake manifold gasket and install the heated gasket (9A589).

Figure 8:

4. While the carburetor is off the engine, remove the choke and anti-dieseling solenoid wires from the existing "J" clip. Install the 48R109 retaining clip under the air horn screw that is just to the left of the screw that holds the existing "J" clip. (Figure 8). While tightening the air horn screw, hold the clip so that it points straight out, away from the carburetor. Torque the air horn screw to 45 in.lbs.

Remove the black plastic convolute tubing from the choke wire. Measure and cut 2 inches off the tube, and reinstall the long section (3 inches) back onto the choke wire. Install the 2-1/4 inch section onto the anti-dieseling solenoid wire. Push the convolute towards the choke cap and solenoid body, and install the wires only (not the convolute) into the new retaining clip only. Make sure the convolute rests on the solenoid bracket in order to prevent wear on the solenoid wire.
5. Replace the carburetor assembly and reconnect the associated fuel and vacuum lines. Reconnect the TV control linkage, if so equipped, and check for function. Reconnect any electrical connections except the blue connectors that supply current to the anti-dieseling solenoid.

Figure 7:

6. To the above-mentioned blue electrical connectors, connect the mating blue electrical connectors on the large jumper harness (9A451) included in the kit.
NOTE: Some vehicles will have the large jumper harness already installed as an integral part of the main engine harness. These vehicles will have four connectors (two blue, one gray and one black) taped to the engine harness near the point where the lead goes to the choke cap. They will also have an electrical eyelet taped to the harness near the starter relay, and an electrical connector that mates with the 9345 relay taped near the passenger side headlamp. For service of such vehicles, untape the above-mentioned connectors and discard the large jumper harness (9A451) included in the kit.
7. Connect the gray electrical connector from the carbto-intake manifold gasket to the mating gray connector on the large jumper harness.

Figure 9:

8. Remove the iron plug in the intake manifold (Figure 9) and install the 9F726 temperature switch in that location, using teflon tape near the bottom of the threads. Torque to 16-18 ft.lbs.
9. Connect the small jumper wire 10A998 included in the kit to the temperature switch terminal, and connect the black electrical connector on the other end of the jumper wire to the mating black connector on the larger jumper harness.
10. Connect the electrical eyelet on the large jumper harness to the positive terminal of the starter relay (the terminal that has a red wire from battery positive).
11. The 9345 relay is to be mounted on the radiator support, to the right (fender side) of the passenger side headlamp and approximately at the same height as the top of the headlamp. Remove the washer fluid reservoir to gain access to this area.
12. Using a #29 (0.136 inch diameter) drill, drill two holes, one above the other and 3/8 inches apart in the radiator support. The holes are to be located approximately two inches from the right side edge of the radiator support, with the upper hole approximately one inch below the upper edge of the radiator support. Locate the tab on the relay mounting bracket in the upper hole, and in the lower hole attach the relay using the self-tapping screw (N801846) included in the kit.
13. Route the jumper harness alongside the main engine harness to the headlamp area, and connect the jumper harness electrical connector to the relay.
14. Reinstall the washer fluid reservoir, being careful to replace all electrical connections and fluid tubes that had been removed.
15. Secure the jumper harnesses where necessary. Secure the gasket wire and temperature switch wire in the remaining "J" clip on the carburetor. If so equipped, the engine coolant temperature sensor wire may also be secured in this "J" clip.
16. Check coolant level and add coolant as necessary. (Some coolant may have been lost when the plug was removed.)
17. Check and adjust idle speeds as necessary.
18. Reinstall the air cleaner horn.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
