Timing marks are located on the flywheel which are visible through a window at the upper surface of the transmission case below the cylinder head.

On MTX vehicles, a cover plate retained by two screws must be removed to view the timing marks. The marks are located on the outer edge of the flywheel in two degree increments. To set timing, align the pointer with the specified mark (Figure 7, View A).
On ATX vehicles, there is no cover plate to remove, Symbols are indented on the outer face of the flywheel in five degree increments. Figure 7, View B outlines the symbol increments for 50 States ATX calibrations, and Figure 7, View C outlines Canada ATX calibrations that have the same symbols but different values than 50 States. To set timing, align the pointer pin with the specified mark.
NOTE: To set or check initial timing the "spout" wire at the distributer must be disconnected.
